Type 9 - Ring Steady Rest
Ring steady rests are meant for long thin and crude workpieces, which are going to have extended corrugations. With these steady rests, bends or distortions can be worked upon to produce straight workpieces once again. The ring steady rest is positioned in the centre of the workpiece as a support. At this point, it rotates along with the workpiece – i.e. it is driven by the workpiece. The centre axis is controlled using corresponding means and is rectified by clamping in the steady rest. The processing then takes place from right and left right up to the steady. An advantage of this workpiece type is that vibrations and oscillations are restricted, so that the workpiece can subsequently be stabilised using other steady rests.
